Name: Michelle Zambrello Date:__ Grade: 3rd grade
School: Smith Elementary School Classroom Teacher: Ms, Budja
Title of Lesson: Visualizing Fractions
Lesson Outline
Content Standards: Identify local, state or national curricular standards that your lesson is aligned with. Describe the key knowledge and skills the students will demonstrate at the end of the lesson. See CT Dept. of Education and Common Core State Standards
Develop understanding of fractions as numbers
1.) 3.NF.1 Understand a fraction 1/ b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is portioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b
2.) 3.NF. 3 Exlplain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about thier size.
Student Learning Objective(s):
At the end of this lesson the students will have been introduced to various ways to visualize a fraction and be able to solve word problems using those visualizations.
Assessment: Describe the form of assessment used for the students to demonstrate learning based on your learning objective.
The assessment I will have the students do is solve some word problems. They will take this interactive quiz and have scrap paper on the side to show thier work and visualizations
Quizlet http://quizlet.com/21297036/math-fractions-flash-cards/ Materials and Resources: (Including books, websites, guests, etc.)
White board
Markers
Computer to show video and take quizlet
Pencils
worksheet
Initiation:
video of fractions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnFrOetuUKg It has a catchy tune that will excite the third graders and they may even start to sing along. I will also review fractions on the white board/ smart board
Lesson Development:
I will start by reviewing what a fraction is and write on the white board modeling that it consists of a numerator and denominator. Part over whole
I will play the video with the catchy tune
Next, I will pick 10 volunteers and will say something along the lines of if you are wearing a blue shirt raise your hand. I will then ask the class to say in unison the fraction of students who are raising their hands
Warm up activity I will pass around a piece of paper with 3 warm up problems. It will be a circle broken into equal parts with some being shaded. They will write a fraction that shows what area of each circle is shaded.
Next, on the white board I will show some ways to express a fraction visually. I will show it using a drawn candy bar. I will then show it with a circle graph and discuss the features of each part of the circle graph. I will use a classrooms favorite ice cream flavor.
• The whole circle represents all of the different types of ice cream the class likes best.
• The larger section = more students like that specific flavor best
• Use the graph to explain that each section represents fraction of the whole collection
After I show the chart I will guide them in helping them form comparison statements using the chart.
The next thing the students will do is solve some word problems on quizlet link
